The KIWI Problem

Three major things in the New Zealand have the exact same name:
So you can't just walk around and say, "Hey hand me that kiwi, it looks nice and ripe", because you are going to get a lot of odd looks. EVERYONE in NZ calls it "Kiwi Fruit". So the correct way to say the sentence would be "Hey Kiwi, could you hand me that Kiwi Fruit?" Yeah, that's a lot of Kiwi in one sentence.
I never heard anyone call the bird a "Kiwi bird" so I don't know how you would ever tell the difference between the bird and the native New Zealander in a typical conversation. Luckily, the bird is nocturnal and hard to come across, so the Kiwi human rarely crosses paths with the Kiwi bird.

Mixing up a fruit and a human wasn't a terrible language barrier.  But I really couldn't ever get over Stubbies.

Welcome to the world of man thighs. Stubbies, say hello to America.
